Sustainability underwrites social acceptance. Irrigation schemes developed by Tasmanian Irrigation are demonstrably sustainable in the hydrology of their water source, in construction and in operation.

The 95% reliability of TI schemes is demonstrated on the basis of historical hydrology data. However, the history of rainwater run-off and stream-flow does not take into account the impacts of climate change. Reliability of TI schemes is further tested against future climate using methodology developed by Australia’s premier research body, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) through its Tasmanian Sustainable Yields project. Using the CSIRO’s considerable expertise, this project has examined water availability in Tasmania through to 2030 under wet, median and extreme dry scenarios. TI refers all projects it develops to the Commonwealth Government for assessment under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, regardless of whether we think that the individual project warrants it or not.  TI willingly submits its projects for scrutiny for any impacts of scheme hydrology, construction and operation on matters of national environmental significance.

Tasmanian Irrigation also understands that its environmental obligations extend beyond development of schemes to include their enduring impacts once operating. It is a requirement that water from schemes developed by Tasmanian Irrigation may be applied on farm only in accordance with a completed Farm Water Access Plan (Farm WAP). Farm WAPs contain water, soil and biodiversity modules to ensure that the application of water accords with modern sustainability principles. The minimum requirement to access water from a scheme developed by Tasmanian Irrigation is that a Farm WAP is in place to cover the area of land directly affected by the use of scheme water and that the land is managed in accordance with any recommendations or restrictions identified in the Farm WAP.
