Tasmanian Irrigation has welcomed this week’s State Budget, which reconfirms funding commitments for three major irrigation projects in Tasmania.

Chief Executive Officer Mike Sylvester said Tasmanian Irrigation is proud to have bipartisan support at State and Federal level for transformative projects.

“Investment in Tasmania’s irrigation infrastructure, through Tasmanian Irrigation, has underpinned substantial job creation, regional economic growth, agri-tourism, commodity diversification, market supply reliability, national food security and on-farm climate change resilience.

“Irrigated agriculture plays a transformative role in turning potential into prosperity, as reliable access to water for irrigation is the catalyst for expansion to high-value crops and diversifying into new enterprises.

“We are proud of this contribution, and of the transformative power irrigation has to deliver benefits not just for farms, but for regional communities and for the wider Tasmanian economy.”

Combined Australian and Tasmanian Government investment in Tasmania’s irrigation infrastructure totals $350 million across the forward estimates and includes $122 million reconfirmed in this week’s State Budget.

Funding will enable completion of the Northern Midlands Irrigation Scheme, construction of the Sassafras Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme augmentation, and completion of detailed design and construction of the Greater South East Irrigation Scheme.
