What’s the pathway to 2050?

Our mission is to deliver water where and when it’s needed to support sustainable agricultural growth in Tasmania. We know, and farmers tell us, that highly reliable water for irrigation is the key to derisking farming activity in Tasmania.

That’s why Tasmanian Irrigation plays a critical role in helping grow the annual value of the State's agriculture to $10 billion by 2050.

In July 2025, CEO Mike Sylvester presented to the Midwinter Forum hosted by the Tasmanian Agricultural Productivity Group: “Towards 2050 – Moving the Agricultural Industry Forward”. Mike told the forum there is a direct relationship between the availability of increasing capacity in our scheme network and the growth in value of the farming sector.

With agricultural growth comes wider economic benefit for Tasmania. Every 1,000 megalitres of water delivered triggers up to $4 million in on-farm investment, supporting local supply chains, up to $3 million in general economic benefit for the State, and creation of around 25 direct and indirect jobs.

The sustainable growth of irrigated agriculture is undeniably good for Tasmania.

Continuing to build capacity in our network of irrigation schemes requires construction of new irrigation schemes and augmentation of existing schemes.
